The Area
Sandbanks
Sandbanks is a small peninsula crossing the mouth of Poole Harbour on the English Channel at Poole, Dorset, England.
Internationally acknowledged and recognised as one of the most exclusive areas in the world, Sandbanks has the accolade of the Blue Flag award, which it has maintained for 25 years, more than any other beach in the country. Sandbanks, and the surrounding area, boasts the largest natural harbour in Europe (the second largest natural harbour in the world), with miles of golden sand and sheltered waters. It is perfect for either learning the latest water sport, enjoying world-class cuisine, or simply lazing on the beach in the sun.
Water sports
Sandbanks is one of the best locations for water sports in the UK and a mecca for kiteboarding, windsurfing, paddleboarding and sailing enthusiasts of all levels of experience.
Poole Bay offers an exceptional and safe place for water sports; calm seas and good consistent wind all year round make it a unique location. More advanced riders have miles of open water with good offshore winds and the Jurassic Coast on one side, and on the other side of the peninsula, Poole Bay is a sheltered harbour with only waist-height water, making it ideal for beginners. Local businesses offering equipment hire include: The Watersports Academy, Poseidon, and Easy Riders to name but a few.
Dining
Sandbanks cuisine is all about sustainable and locally sourced ingredients and you’re going to be really spoilt for choice!
There are such a wide variety of local eateries whether you’re a family or looking for a romantic dinner for two while enjoying the spectacular sea views. The wonderful Rick Stein restaurant is very popular and close by, and a short drive away is the renowned ‘Ocean Palace’ at Harbour Heights Hotel. Across the chain ferry is the delightful The Pig on the Beach and Shellbay Restaurant & Bistro.
Sandbanks Ferry
The Sandbanks Ferry crosses the short stretch of water across to the Purbecks, giving access to Shell Bay, Swanage and the rest of the magnificent Jurassic coastline and stunning Purbeck countryside.
Operated and owned by the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company, the Sandbanks Ferry has been providing passage for residents and visitors for over 90 years. With the ability to carry up to 48 vehicles it has become the shortest route connecting Bournemouth, Poole and Swanage, saving a 25-mile return journey from Poole to Swanage. It takes around 4 minutes to make the crossing which gives you time to sit back and wind down in your car or get out and enjoy the beautiful views.
Beaches
Sandbanks Beach is arguably the best beach in the UK for its soft golden sand, crystal clear water, breath-taking views and commitment to the environment, and perfect for family days out at the seaside.
It has enjoyed coveted Blue Flag status for over 35 years in a row, having first received the award in 1987. The beautiful award-winning sandy beaches are close by while the open sea offers some of the best sailing and coastline right on your doorstep.
Sandbanks boasts some great facilities with a large crazy golf course and mini golf course behind the beach, with a children’s play area with climbing, swings, sand diggers and sensory play area. If you’re feeling sporty there’s volleyball, slackline and table tennis.
